1920's The Makeup

As you all may know the Speak Easy Roaring 1920's is my most inspiring era I create to. I am attracted to the Designers that arose, Coco Chanel for the little Black Dress, among other straightline dresses as well as Max Meyer, Lanvin and Patou.

During the 1920's MGM created Motion Pictures, black and white films without sound. With this, actors and actresses hand gestures, dress and expressions were their tunnel to expressing emotion.

What better way to create emotion than in the face.

The MakeUp~

Grey Smokey eyes (Turquiose and other shades of Green were also in high fashion for shadows) with thin rounded penciled in eyebrows.

Rouge (which is what we now call Blush) in many colors of Rose, Raspberry and by the mid 1920's even Orange became into fashion. Not to mention "Rouge" (blush) being placed underneath the cheekbone for contouring to give the illusion of high deep cheek bones.

Lips were colored into a puckering shape called "Cupid's Bow" these colors were most popular in Deep Red and Brownish Reds, Plum and again, Orange.

2011 Pick from The Knot Best of Weddings

I am honored to announce that I have been chosen as The Knot's 2011 Vendor Best of Weddings. I received the call last night in my United Kingdom home with my new husband the day after our wedding reception. Rebecca from TheKnot "Congratulations Sara, you are our 2011 Pick on The Knot Best of Weddings!" without a doubt, I was so over-joyed that I squealed on the phone "EEEEEEEEE!", then of course happy tears. She went on to say I was the only Makeup Artist chosen in my market and they love my work and are impressed with all the achievements I have had over the year, another "EEEEEEEEEE!". We opened a bottle of champagne and toasted.

After many sleepless nights in my studio, endless hours on the internet digging into my emails, countless contracts sent out among all the organizing and juggling for the weddings, my hard work has paid off.

A Fairy Tale Wedding

The rumors and buzz are true, Sara Faella Artist Designer Stylist has tied the knot!

But with who?

Her long lost British love, Mr. Sam Rockett. If you had ever asked Sara Faella if she would marry or fall in love to "the one" she would have quickly and satisfactorily stated "no". Completely satisfied and encompassed in her passion of work, she never would have thought she would ever have been reunited with her international boyfriend of eight years ago....

What stories are made of, how the standard of love was created:

January 2003, I was an 18 year old student at Berkeley College in New York City working at a restaurant on 59th Street..Hooters Restaurant to be exact (not easy for me to admit) and in comes Sam Rockett, a 19 year old British resident and student from the United Kingdom that was on holiday with his friends for his birthday. He sits in my section and I was instantly mesmerized by his charm, style and of course that accent. He had hurt his ankle by attempting the moon walk earlier on ice in the city, so I couldn't help but tend to him at this oh so vulnerable situation, we end up chatting as I completely ignore all of my other tables at the restaurant and at the end of his meal I invite him and his friends out with some girlfriends from work. We all have a wonderful time together and at the close of the night I give Sam my phone number.

He never called. **gasp**

Days later, I figured he wasn't interested and had flown back home. I had gotten out of work early and was walking through freezing Times Square with my black velvet winter hat on and my hands puckering up my winter coat collar to block the cold wind.

Then, Sam walks by.

I didn't see him....but he responds to his friend "That was her", astonished his friend says "It was?" in disbelief they talk about it (which was probably for ages because we all know how men are) until his friend finally says "run after her" but by the time Sam finally decides come after me I was quite a far away, so he had to run.....far. By the time he reached me he yelled "SARA!" I turn around, kind of scared "Sam?" the poor thing couldn't even breathe!! I am sure with his sprained ankle wasn't helping him either! I literally stood there for a minute in the middle of Times Square while he caught his breath.

Finally, we get to talking and I ask, right away "Why didn't you call?", he states "I couldn't figure out how to dial on an American phone" (with his accent, I might add)....how could I even be angry at a response so adorable?

We spend the night together and that was it, we were an instant international couple. I flew to the United Kingdom that March, met all of his beautiful friends and family. Visited Stratford Upon Avon, Cardiff Wales (were Sam's flat was) among other beautiful sites that England and Wales had to offer.

Shortly after Sam and his family flew to the States where our families met and once again Sam and I had amazingly fun time together, laughing, joking, enjoying each others company, introducing him to all my friends...but not long after with the Atlantic Ocean in between us we split up, and I got back together with my old high school boyfriend and he begins to date a new girl.

Throughout the next two years Sam and I kept in touch through phone calls and emails..this was even before Facebook! Our phone bills were always horrendous! So, naturally when I split with my boyfriend I phoned Sam right away and said I have broken it off with my boyfriend and will be getting on the next flight to London. But, Sam said to not get on a plane because he had gotten back together with his old girlfriend. I was so angry with him, I didn't speak to him for a month!

After, I got over my temper tantrum Sam and I got right back on track to our friendship with each other always speaking about when we met in New York and our visits to each other, what's new in our lives, how our romantic relationships were going....really just keeping tabs on each other and making sure neither one of us got engaged.

Years go by, that brings us to January 2010, our 7 year anniversary from when we had met and Sam had called me and asked "Are you engaged?!" (with his British accent).

I say "Well, I don't know. I am making life decisions for Niko and I. I feel as though this is something I have to do." Obviously, my heart not in it, but at this point feeling that it was the right thing to do. Sam goes on to tell me "Holly (his girlfriend after me) and I broke up!"

**double gasp**

I honestly thought he was joking. How could this be? The moment I am become unavailable, He all of a sudden becomes available after more than 4 years? So I simply say "It's just not meant to be, we keep missing each other". We accept this answer and continue with our ever growing friendship.

Summer 2010~Sam receives a phone call from me "Sam, just fly out to America we are now both single I need you to be my model for my Men's Couture Tie line that I am launching for Fall/Winter 2010, you have the perfect European flare that compliments my ties perfectly", without a doubt he books a flight for the beginning of September.

Both of us being so busy throughout the summer with work, we hardly speak, but still in the back of our minds and excited.

Waiting in Logan Airport in Boston on September 13th, I had butterflies the whole time...I start wondering do I look okay? Have I aged since I was 18? Am I gross? What if Niko doesn't like him? Will he still smell the same? Should I hug him? Should I kiss him on the cheek? and of course What if I fall in love with him all over again? What if I never stopped loving him and everything that has happened in my life were just stepping stones to bring me and Niko to him?

Then.....right when I thought he would walk through the International Terminal, he did. I thought "Oh my goodness, he is so handsome." Then he spoke, with that accent! "Are you all right?" I couldn't stop smiling. He was perfect. Everything I had been waiting for in a man, everything I wanted and everything I adored. All along it was Sam Rockett, my long lost British boyfriend.

On Tuesday evening he proposes to me without a ring, only a promise that he was certain that I was the one for him, throughout the years I always was the one and everything about our love was meant to be and we were exactly where we were supposed to be....

Thursday we are married on a little cliff in Misquamicut Beach.

When it comes down to it, for me. My wedding was perfect. He placed a wedding band on my finger that was a vintage anniversary band that was my Grandmothers that was given to me by my Mother the evening before our wedding, and Sam's band was given to him by his Mother years ago for his graduation present...and they coincidentally matched perfectly. We had each other and Niko, two amazing photographers from Two True Photography and an amazing videographer, Mike Picard that we contacted the night before and the morning of our wedding that were so over joyed for us and without a second thought rearranged their schedules for us to help capture our very private ceremony...I remember stepping back for a moment during all the excitement of the day, being so grateful and watching everybody that could not wash away their excitement even if they tried! Seeing people so happy and supportive for us, for our love and our destiny just confirmed that Love is an intangible, undefinable blessing that was given to us and meant to be shared so if there was ever a doubt by anyone in the world that true love doesn't exist.....it does.

Even from many years of passings and thousands of miles in between us, love prevailed.

Eyelash Extension Advice for Your Wedding Day

Here is a topic that is brought up over and over again. I am here to clear up any questions and help guide you in the right eyelash extension application that is perfect for you on your big day.

There are many applications with a wide price range. I would completely suggest speaking with your makeup artist during your consultation to she if she one, she can apply them for you and two, which forms of extensions she offers along with the brands she uses.

LET'S TALK SMALL:

Over the Counter Strip (full strip or corner) Temporary Eyelash Extensions

these range from about $2.49-4.99 per pair at a drug store (ie. duraLash) or $10.00+ for department store brand (ie. mac, laura mercier, etc)

*these are for a more dramatic look, this Bride would most likely be having an evening wedding or a bride that normally wears makeup on a daily basis and wants a little more dramatization for her big day.

Over the Counter Individual/Small Grouped Temporary Eyelash Extensions

these have the same price points as the Strips above

*these eyelashes have a more natural look achieving a "naturally dramatic" look, that I find common for morning/afternoon brides as well as for brides who wouldn't normally wear makeup daily and are going for "I want to look like myself, just a little more done up".

**these are easy to apply I recommend DUOLash adhesive it is hypo allergenic and I little more pricey than the duralash brand but great for sensitive eyes. The great concept of eyelash extensions is little to no mascara is needed although I suggest to blend the natural to the synthetic lashes. If you are unsure of applying synthetic lashes to your eyes, GISELLE brand uses all natural hair and are handmade eyelash extensions, very natural although I have noticed that they need to be trimmed to fit.

LET'S BRING IT UP A NOTCH:

For the serious eyelash bride I have to suggest the Semi-Permanent Eyelash Extension application. This is more costly, last longer but has more maintenance. This application process can be found in professional salons and spas or through the more advanced makeup artist. This is a two hour application that last 4-6 weeks with fills needed about every 2 weeks. The great advantage to this application is it normally comes with a mini-facial. Although the price points are much higher with an initial application of $225-$400+ and fills ranging from $20-$60+

Most commonly asked questions:

how long do they last (temporary)?

these listed above are really only meant for 24hour use. Although I have had them last for 3 days you just have to be careful when washing your eyes (cannot wash eyelashes, only around them). Also, like makeup if not washed bacteria can grow and cause infection. I have never seen this happen to me or any of my clients but have studied that this is a common side effect.

how do I remove them (temporary)?

they come off relatively easy. when showering cleanse your face last while letting the steam and moisture loosen the glue. When ready to cleanse, wash your face and eyes as normal (most will have fallen off by this point) pulling the synthetic lashes from the root, they should slide right off. If you feel a resistance (slight tug while tying to remove), do not force simply apply a small amount of baby oil to a q-tip and apply in between eyelashes the synthetic eyelash(es) should remove from natural lash instantly.

THE INTERN! Fina's First Blog!

HI! I’m Fina Sara Faella Artist Designer Stylist’s new Intern. I really enjoy being her intern, she’s full of life and we never have a dull moment. I always enjoy her company and her beautiful son Niko as well. She is very passionate about what she does and is always so cheery in addition to that she comes in with an enormous smile; she has such a big heart for a person with such a tiny body.

Since I have started interning I have quite a few tasks to complete such as, finding a venue to host a fashion show in the near future, networking with photographers in all of New England and New York. Along with all of that I have also concluded to plenty of research for the company. . . And I’m blogging!

I am very open to learning anything and everything about fashion, everything that Sara teaches me I absorb like a sponge. I am very interested in learning the designing perspective, business standpoints and what it takes to construct and maintain a distinguished brand/ establishment. I am hoping to gain plenty of knowledge from this experience, in company with a great friendship that will last a lifetime.

In the future I anticipate to be attending an astonishing college majoring in Business and Marketing and mionoring in Visual Communications along with designing a fabulous collection of my own. A prophecy to myself would be traveling to various regions of the world to explore along with gather loads of wisdom and then maybe I will have an intern of my own. . . Needless, I will maintain a never-ending relationship with Sara and of course Niko as well.

The Consultation Comes to Me

I am an On-Location Artist but every now and then a bride comes to my home. When that happens, pampering is delivered on a whole other level. When Marcia arrived to my beach condo in Westerly early Saturday morning Enigma was softly playing, candles burning throughout the home and treats waiting for her....chocolate covered strawberries, mimosa's, homemade cookies and cinnamon bun pastries.

We started our Consultation by enjoying a delicious mimosa and talking about her wedding, her theme, her dress and her bridesmaids dresses. After reviewing copies of the dresses and photographs of Marcia's hair ideas...I was so excited to get to work.

I set her hair in curls and started applying pigment to her skin and of course...EyeLash extensions! Which were practically made for her eyes...she was stunning. Most importantly she was happy! Not only was Marcia an absolute porcelain doll to work with but she was so sweet. I truly enjoyed our conversation about friends and family, I felt as though I had known her forever. I can't wait for her Newport wedding this summer!

I feel so very fortunate this year to be attending some of the most inspirational and amazing shows/exhibitions/lectures. After being pregnant for practically a whole year and learning how to be the best mother I can be, I finally feel like I am back into my professional and entrepreneur adventures! I am right back in the fashion and beauty/spa industry...right where I have been for over 7 years and I have to say it feels so good to be doing what I love once again!

I absolutely LOVED the International Beauty Show once again this year and will be attending the same show in Vegas at the end of April to take more classes and continue to network!

What H2O Means For Your Skin

There are many controversies as to what water does for the skin and how much should be consumed. I have researched this topic and am happy to share my thoughts and opinions on this important beauty subject.

I am in agreement that possibly large consumptions of water is really not the most beneficial. The "8 by 8 rule", 8 glasses of water per day is actually too much water and although consuming water has many benefits to the body like flushing out toxins, it is stated that because of the high velocity rate that the water travels through the system, it does not have enough time to reach the epidermis (the outer layer of skin where pores are). It is best to use facial hydrator applications (lotions) to acquire skin hydration. Although, if an individual is extremely dehydrated the consumption of water through many sources (fruit, vegetables, bottled distilled water) will reduce acne breakouts because the toxins in the body are released and prevent these toxins from building up pores.

In addition, proper hydration can eliminate and/or reduce dark circles under the eye, sunken eyes and can restore skin plumpness. Another benefit of drinking water in large amounts for the skin is in the treatment of skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis.

Depending on the person, 4 servings of water per day will keep the body hydrated. Remember you can get your water servings from many sources not just out of the bottle.....fruits, veggies...even caffeine believe it or not....try to stay away from alcohol or choose to drink water along with it.

Airbrush Makeup VS. Foundation Makeup

This is the most common question when clients are deciding "Which one should I use?". I do understand that airbrush makeup is the newest form of makeup application out, I am here to help you decide which type of application is right for you.

Airbrush Artistry when applied forms a thinner, lighter layer of foundation. In order to create a sweat resistant application it is recommended to mix in an alcohol based top coat. There is a little controversy as to whether it lasts longer than a liquid foundation application. Theater and Commercial typically do not use Airbrush technique as the pigment is not saturated nor as flawless enough to withstand lighting and the camera lens. Until, The TEMPTUPRO Airbrush Makeup hit the stands!

My personal take is Temptu Airbrush Artistry is fun to work and gives a flawless complexion and holds up even under extreme weather conditions. Normally you have to use a foundation brush to blend the airbrush foundation as well as apply concealers and correctors since the foundation application is not strong enough to cover age spots, blemishes, fine lines, redness or any other imperfections. Many makeup artist charge extra for air brush makeup applications, I do not and am happy to apply traditional foundation or Airbrush techniques at the same price.

Although I will say there is something about using a brush that makes an application process artistic and special..contouring the face, illuminating and highlighting, saturating with rich and soft pigments, is my passion and I tend to use a mixture of both brush and airbrush.

For my makeup savvy ladies, Dior makes an airbrush can "Dior Airbrush" that is fun to work with I still had to blend it with a brush but it has a nice hint of illumination in the foundation.

Eyelash Extension Application by Eve Pearl International Beauty Show

I attended the International Beauty Show in NYC at the Jacob Javits Center. On Sunday, March 7th Eve Pearl was teaching a class "The Flawless Bride". Eve Pearl is a 5 time Oscar Winner with her own makeup line called Eve Pearl. She was also makeup artist for "The View" for 5 consecutive years as well. I was able to get a video of her applying EyeLash Extensions. She had some great tips!

Since, EyeLash Extensions and Brow Shaping are my specialties. I thought this video was extremely fitting for my blog and wanted to share these tips along with my fans and followers. Unfortunately I was having difficulties uploading the video to my blogger, please refer to my facebook I will be uploading it on there.

When applying synthetic eyelash extensions, start from the inside corner of the eye to the outside, Eve Pearl likes to use black eyelash glue, I prefer white that dries clear. Since you normally go over the eye with liner anyway you can can choose how thick you would like to line in rather than the eyelashes determining it. I personally think it looks a little cleaner as well. Always make sure the eye is half open while looking down so you don't glue the eyes together along with consistently wiping up any "fall-out" glue that may come down.

Once eyelashes are set, place a finger behind the eyelashes and with a clean mascara wand, apply mascara in a zig zag motion so you connect the natural lashes with the synthetic lashes. Let dry and you have beautiful naturally dramatic looking eyelashes for any event!

My Red Head Bridal Consultation

I was so happy to work with Tina and her small bridal party, which really only consisted of her mother and mother in law. Obviously, the two most very special women in her life. We had everything mapped out for this consultation. Tina, had emailed exactly what she was looking for, for her hair (1/2 up do or 3/4 up do) and warned me "I'm a red head so we have to be careful" (for makeup). Really...how sweet is she? I giggled when I read her emails. Just seeing how detail oriented my bride was, I knew I was in for a treat...and a treat I was! She was beautiful. Before I even started applying pigment to her fair yet amazingly untarnished face, she was stunning. I told her "I am really only accenting what you already have.".

I got to work...her mother and mother in law keeping me quite entertained with fashion stories, sailing/yacht adventures....not to mention Tina and her fiancee had laid out a large assortment of brownies, fruits and veggies..what a girls day we were having! I forgot I was even working!

With red heads and I'm sure Tina can vouch, it is not the easiest matching color. My suggestions and rule of thumb is: never match eye shadow to eye color, stick with earthy colors, stay away from pinks and reds, as well as orange based bronzers.

Viola~ a beautiful bride and an eager fiancee. When we asked her adoring fiancee what he thought he said "She looks like I could marry her right now" even though his mother and mother in law were in aww of this love this man had for his fiancee, I was completely taken back and speechless. Go Green Vintage Style

As you all may know my accessories bridal collection is inspired by the vintage 1920's and 30's. I wanted to expand my thoughts and my research on Vintage and how going Vintage goes Green.

Vintage is a generic term for new or second hand garments originating from a previous era. Generally speaking, clothing which was produced before the 1920s is referred to as antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 1980 is considered Vintage. Retro, short for retrospective, usually refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era. Clothing produced more recently is usually called modern or contemporary fashion. Most vintage clothing has been previously worn, but a small percentage of pieces have not. These are often old warehouse, or shop stock. These items are usually referred to by dealers as "dead stock", "old stock" or "new-old stock" and can be more sought after and more valuable than those that have been worn, especially if they have their original tags. At times, the cycle of fashion design turns to history for inspiration, and garments closely resembling original vintage (retro or antique) clothing are manufactured. Styles are generally referred to as "vintage inspired" or "vintage reproductions" depending on the faithfulness to the historical design, and serve as a convenient alternative to those who admire an old style but prefer a modern interpretation - another advantage is that, unlike the original garments, they are usually available in a range of sizes and perhaps, colours and/or fabrics.

Using Vintage clothes or fabrics is a great way for designers to go Green. Reusing these "recycled" pieces whether for inspiration of crafting helps preserve our natural resources.

Beauty.com Gets iPhone Application

Mobile Beauty

As I was reading my subscription of WWD today (Feb. 26 WWD Beauty issue) I found an interesting and useful piece of information.

BEAUTY.COM is on iPhone!

Here is what they had to say~

"Beauty.com? There's a new app for that. The ecommerce site, a division of Bellevue, Wash-based Drugstore.com Inc., has teamed up with Apple, Inc. to create Beauty.com iPhone application that allows users to search by category and product and see product reviews. The application was launched this week and created in response to a 237 percent jump in mobile traffic to Drugstore.com and Beauty.com in January compared with the same period last year. The introduction of the iPhone app allows Beauty.com to more effectively serve the growing number of customers who shop on the go, a Beauty.com spokeswomen stated. A key feature of the application is called Your List, which is a section that compiles a list of products that have been purchased in the past that's designed to ease the process of repeat purchasing."

I have this application! It is great! Even though I shop at professionals only distributors, this site has EVERYTHING! Every beauty product, label and brand. I also use this site to refer clients over to view cosmetic ingredients and see product reviews.

The Bridal Consultation that Touched My Heart

Brittany had won a Complimentary Hair & Makeup Session with me for her Wedding Day for filling out a contest form when I was a vendor at the Bridal Expo at MGM Casino on January 24th 2010. As soon as I met her, I hoped she would take me up on my offer. Nothing makes me happier than working on such a deserving, beautiful bride-to-be.

As I pulled up to her quant home in New London, CT I was thrilled. I couldn't wait to start contouring her perfect like bone structure with pigment. As thrilled as I was to work on her hair and make-up to help her prepare for her perfect wedding on June 19th, which amazingly enough is the same day as my son's 1st Birthday (I just knew it was meant to be), I had no idea how much I would fall in love with such a special person as her, her family and the love that her and her fiancee share together.

It was truly special to see how much love and support Brittany's family and fiancee have for her. Every moment her Fiancee, Joe DiSantis got, he peeked around the corner as I was working one her just to tell her how beautiful she looked.

Brittany's mother couldn't stop gloating about Brittany telling me baby and childhood stories about her which couldn't help me but think how incredibly strong of a woman that Brittany is. I think it's so remarkable that one person could go through hardships, special events and turn into such a caring and sweet person. A person, that has a devoted family and soon-to-be husband that from where I was standing, could tell this woman is going to be happy for the rest of her life and always be surrounded with wonderful people.

I am so honored to be a part of Brittany's special day. It's people like Joe & Brittany, that prove that true love really exist everyday, their love is what people dream of and hope for. How truly wonderful it is for the world to know that it is not just in fairy tales but right next door in the town of New London, CT.

Boudoir Photo Shoot with Rachel

Many women wonder, what is a Boudoir Photo Shoot? A Boudoir photo shoot derives from the french from 1800's, A boudoir is a lady's private bedroom, sitting room or dressing room. The term derives from the French verb bouder, meaning "to pout" which I think is pretty cute, this type of shoot is now commonly popular for wives to give to their husbands or future husbands. You do not have to be naked..few actually do. It is meant to be tasteful, seductive yet artistic on a very personal level.
Some woman get all their girlfriends together, hire photographer, makeup artist and rent a hotel room and have a fun experience together. Other woman, just do it privately in their own home or a studio. My new contact, Sara from Sara's Photography has a studio in her home, it's very private and she has great furniture and prop's to use for the shoot. Also, I provide pieces from my hair accessories line Sara Faella, that you could purchase that day if you feel you just cannot part with them at the end of your shoot:)
You provide your own lingerie..think of yourself as getting ready as a Victoria's secret model in a fashion show;)
You can also bring your husbands favorite sports jersey to wear too.
